World War II Pearl Harbor Heroes Adventure Tour

by Howery
April 16th, 2015

This Pearl Harbor Heroes Adventure tour begins with transportation from guest hotels to the Arizona Memorial Visitor Center. Numerous artifacts from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor can be appreciated at your own pace. Guests then ride on the Navy launch across Pearl Harbor to the Arizona Memorial. Here the sunken remains of the USS Arizona and the resting place of more than 1,000 sailors were killed in the December 7, 1941 attack.

Audio tours are available to the general public at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Bowfin. This submarine is nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger” for its contributory role in the epic WWII battles in the Pacific theatre. In December 1971, this submarine was taken back to Pearl Harbor, where she now serves as a memorial. Some areas of the ship are off limits.

The Pacific Aviation Museum begins in Hangar 37, a 42,000 square foot former seaplane hangar that survived the December 7, 1941 attack. Transportation to Ford Island is by shuttle bus. Restored planes are lined up in Hangar 79, an 80,000 square foot seaplane hangar. At each end, the hangar doors blue glass windows are still riddled with bullet holes left by the Japanese attack. From the site of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor to the signing of the surrender aboard the USS Missouri, guests walk in the footsteps of America’s courageous heroes.

The next special guided tour is on the USS Missouri. This battleship received a total of 11 battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf, and was finally decommissioned on 31 March 1992. In 1998, she was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and became a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The USS Missouri is where the Japanese surrendered to the Allies in 1945.
